Norway prison system and resettlement

Overview:

In the 1990’s, Norway had a problem as 70% of released prisoners recommitted crimes within two years of release.  After a complete reform was made to the system it has become a model for the rest of the world. Norway’s recidivism rate (from 70% to 20%) as well as prisons are now safer. This was done by decentralising prisons allowing for family relationships, making them more community based and focused on rehabilitation both during and after  incarcerated.  Inger Marie Fridhov criminologist states, “The key aim is to make the release a predictable event. The incarcerated individual is informed about the date and time of release, as well as what awaits them in terms of housing, employment, finances, education, and health. A team of 25 specially trained release coordinators operates within the prisons, collaborating with guards and other stakeholders in the release process. Their role is to establish essential connections with local authorities, who assume responsibility for the former inmate from the initial day post-release.”
